Glencreggan, dun site

The ruins of Glencreggan dun sit on a hillside near Tarbert, commanding views across the Kintyre Peninsula. It's a proper Iron Age fortress - what remains are the thick stone walls of a broch-like structure, weathered but still impressive if you know what you're looking at. The walk up takes maybe twenty minutes from the road, and it's worth doing on a clear day when you can actually see something from the top.

This is one for archaeology enthusiasts and serious walkers rather than casual tourists. Families with young children might find it disappointing - there's not much interpretation on site, and once you've looked at the walls for ten minutes, there's not loads to do. But if you're into Iron Age Scotland or planning a proper historical tour of Argyll, it slots in well.

The nearest parking is a bit rough and ready, and you'll need decent boots for the final approach. There's no charge, and no facilities - bring water. The site works best as part of a broader peninsula walk or combined with nearby Carradale Point, rather than as a standalone stop.

Stay at Muasdale Holiday Park or Killegruer Caravan Site and you're well-positioned for exploring this corner of Kintyre. Both are close by, and the area rewards proper investigation - you'll find far more character here than in the more obvious tourist spots.
