Glenmorangie Distillery and Visitor Centre

The approach to Glenmorangie near Tain is quietly impressive - rolling Highland landscape gives way to a proper working distillery where they've actually been making whisky since 1843. You walk through the visitor centre and then get access to the production floor itself, which is the real draw. Watching the copper stills gleam under industrial lighting while your guide explains why they use the tallest stills in Scotland - it genuinely affects the spirit - is worth the trip alone.

The tour itself takes roughly two hours and covers everything from barley selection through to maturation. They don't skimp on detail, which suits whisky enthusiasts and curious adults far more than families with restless kids. The tasting room at the end is where most people linger, sampling three or four drams depending on which tour tier you've booked. Prices aren't cheap but they're in line with other Speyside distilleries.

Timing-wise, go in summer if you can - the long daylight and the local landscape matter more than you'd expect. The distillery closes for a fortnight over Christmas, so plan around that. Opening hours shift from June through August (10am-5pm daily) to weekdays-only during winter months.

For a park-based holiday, you're well positioned between Dornoch Firth Caravan Park just down the road and Dornoch Caravan & Camping Park a bit further out. The Highlands around Tain have plenty of walks and coastal routes to balance out the whisky touring. One morning here fits nicely into a longer trip without feeling rushed.
