Glenwhan Gardens and Tearoom

You'll find Glenwhan Gardens tucked away near Newton Stewart, and it's one of those places that rewards you for bothering to track it down. Built over decades by two dedicated gardeners, the garden sprawls across 12 acres of Dumfries & Galloway countryside with proper character - think woodland walks, a working vegetable patch, and collections of trees and shrubs that genuinely feel loved rather than just planted for effect.

The attached tearoom is the real draw for families. It's cosy without being twee, does decent home baking, and you can sit outside overlooking the gardens if the Scottish weather cooperates. Kids will manage an hour or so exploring the paths and spotting the occasional peacock that wanders the grounds. Walkers prefer it - the terrain is gentle enough that you're not fighting with gradients, but there's enough to see that a two-hour visit doesn't feel rushed.

The gardens work brilliantly as a morning stop if you're basing yourself at The Galloway Steading or Sands of Luce Holiday Park - both are within easy reach and the vibe is different enough from a formal park holiday that it breaks up the week nicely.
