Glover's Wood

The woodland here is proper mixed forest - oak, birch, and conifers making up what feels like a serious bit of nature rather than a manicured park walk. Glover's Wood sits just outside Lockerbie, and it's the sort of place you'd stumble into with a dog or a pair of restless kids and suddenly lose an hour or two without noticing.

There's a decent network of paths threading through, nothing too technical but enough variety that you're not just trudging in a straight line. The canopy gets thick enough in summer that you're actually grateful for the shade. Wildlife-watching types might spot roe deer if they're quiet and lucky. Birdwatchers will find it worthwhile during spring migration.

It's free to access and works brilliantly as a half-day activity if you're based at either Cressfield Caravan Park or Hoddom Castle Caravan Park - both within easy striking distance. Families with primary-aged kids will get more out of it than toddlers, though the terrain isn't punishing. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking your time. Going in autumn when the light filters through differently and there are fewer people around is when it actually sings.

Worth noting: there's no visitor centre, no cafe, no facilities to speak of. You're just walking in a wood. Some might call that authentic. Others might prefer somewhere with more structure. If you're after easy access plus something to do while parked up for a week or two in the area, this delivers without fuss.
