Gobbins Visitor Centre

The Gobbins Cliff Path near Larne is one of those places that sounds more dramatic than it actually is - until you're standing on it. This Victorian-era coastal walk clings to the basalt cliffs like something out of a storybook, with the Irish Sea churning below and narrow metal walkways bolted into the rock face doing their best impression of safety equipment.

You're essentially walking along a ledge. There are steps, handrails, and viewing platforms wedged into the cliff at intervals, all dating back to when Edwardian tourists wanted their seaside adventures with a side of proper danger. The path threads through caves, across bridges, and past waterfalls - it's about as close to free-climbing as you can get without actually free-climbing.

It works best for confident walkers who don't mind heights and aren't easily spooked by the sea doing its thing directly below. Young kids might find it thrilling or terrifying depending on temperament; older teens generally love it. History buffs will appreciate the engineering, though the visitor centre does most of the heavy lifting there.

Allow two to three hours for the full experience, depending on how many times you stop to stare at the view or convince your legs to keep going. The path is open year-round, though winter weather can make it slippery.
