There's decent stuff about the abbey that once dominated the town, local artefacts, and enough period detail to make history feel real rather than dusty. The rooms themselves are quite intimate - narrow staircases, low doorways, the sort of space that makes you duck and feel genuinely in period. Most visits take around an hour, which is about right before your legs start complaining about those cobbles.

Families with older kids will find it engaging enough, particularly if they're into local history. Younger ones might get bored after 20 minutes unless you're good at storytelling. Serious history enthusiasts will appreciate the artefact collection and the building's own story.

It's free, which is genuinely brilliant, and the location alone makes it worth pairing with a wander around Shaftesbury's town centre. If you're based at Gold Hill Glamping just up the road, it's an easy stroll down. On a grey Dorset morning it's less appealing, but catch it on a clear day and that view from the museum down the hill to the Blackmore Vale is rather special. Go early to avoid the tour groups.
