Gollard Copse

Walking into Gollard Copse feels like stepping back in time. This Hampshire woodland near Stockbridge is proper old-growth forest - the kind where you actually have to watch your footing because centuries of leaf litter has built up under your boots. It's not a manicured park experience. Gnarled beech and oak dominate, with the canopy thick enough that even on a bright day you're walking in dappled shadow.

The appeal here is straightforward: if you like trees and quiet, you'll love it. Serious walkers use it as part of longer loops around the Test Valley, but even a casual stroll through the heart of the copse takes about forty minutes. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, and frankly that's its strength. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming on its own - it's not a play destination - but it works brilliantly as a morning walk before heading into Stockbridge for lunch.

Access appears to be open access, with no obvious fees or restrictions, though you'll need to know where to park and how to enter. The woodland is best visited autumn through spring when the understory is clearer and you're less likely to battle through overgrown bracken.

If you're staying at Salisbury Hillside or Stockbridge View, this is genuinely worth the short drive. Pair it with the Test Valley trails and you've got a solid day of proper Hampshire walking. The Meadow Glamping is a touch further out, but still within easy reach for a morning adventure.
