Gosforth Nature Reserve

The Gosforth Nature Reserve sits tucked away just inland from Whitley Bay, and it's the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick dash round. You've got woodland, grassland, and wetland areas that genuinely feel like you've stepped out of suburbia into something wild, which is no small feat given how close you are to the coast.

It's a walker's spot first and foremost. The paths are straightforward enough for families with younger kids, though the terrain can get a bit boggy after rain so wellies aren't a daft idea. Birdwatchers have a field day here - bring binoculars and you'll spot everything from woodpeckers to various ducks and waders depending on the season. Spring and early summer are genuinely lovely, when the woodland comes alive and ground-nesting birds are about their business.

The reserve is free to access, which is brilliant. You can do a quick 30-minute loop or spend a good couple of hours if you're the type to stop and actually look at things. There's a proper educational value for school-age kids too - spotting bugs in the wetland or learning to identify tree species keeps them engaged beyond the first ten minutes.
