Graig Wood

Head out from Hereford and you'll find yourself in proper woodland - dense, atmospheric, the sort of place where the light filters through in greens and golds depending on the season. Graig Wood is a straightforward forest walk, nothing too fancy, but solid enough if you're after some peace and a bit of fresh air without having to drive an hour to get somewhere 'proper' outdoorsy.

It's the kind of spot walkers will appreciate more than anyone else. Families with young kids might manage an hour before someone asks when they can turn back, but teenagers or anyone who actually enjoys being among trees will find it worthwhile. The woodland is thick enough that you feel properly away from things, even though you're barely outside Hereford's orbit.

You won't need more than a couple of hours here unless you're really keen on exploring every path. Come in spring when the light's better, or autumn when the floor's carpeted in leaves. Summer can feel a bit gloomy under the canopy.

If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Goytree or Grove Farm are closest at just over 3 miles out - Graig Wood works as an easy morning walk before heading into town or moving on to other Herefordshire spots. It's not dramatic enough to plan a whole trip around, but as part of a wider park holiday in the area, it's a decent use of a few hours. Free to access, naturally, and no faffing about with opening times.
