Grass Copse

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination in its own right, Grass Copse sits just outside Dorking and offers exactly what its name suggests - dense forest, quiet paths, and the sort of place you'll stumble upon if you're exploring the Surrey Hills properly. The trees are tall and thick enough to block out most of the sky, which means it stays damp underfoot even days after rain.

This is walker territory. You're not here for views or a quick photo stop - you're here for the sound of leaves underfoot and the chance to actually breathe some real woodland air without bumping into forty other visitors. The paths wind through mixed forest with enough shade that it's brilliant in summer when everywhere else is baking. Bring proper boots though; it can get boggy in places.

If you're staying at Sands Farm Weekend Camping just down the road, it's a solid way to burn an hour or so without driving anywhere. Kids who like scrambling through undergrowth will get a kick out of it, but younger children or anyone after a gentler stroll might find it a bit relentless. There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - no café, no information boards - so come prepared.

The bigger picture: Sussex and Surrey are thick with forests, and Grass Copse works best as part of a longer ramble through the area rather than as a standalone trip. If you're combining it with other parks or woodland walks in the region, it slots in nicely. Worth the detour if you're in the area, but don't plan your whole holiday around it.
