Gravel Hill

Gravel Hill doesn't announce itself. There's no car park, no signage, just a modest rise on the outskirts of Wokingham that locals know about and visitors stumble upon by accident. It's exactly what the name suggests - a gravel pit that's been left to do its own thing, which means decent views across the Bracknell area if you bother to climb up. The summit sits around 80 metres above sea level, which doesn't sound much until you realise how flat everything else is round here.

On a clear day you can pick out the surrounding towns and get a sense of the landscape that most people rushing through on the M4 never see. It's not dramatic - this is Home Counties topography, after all - but there's something satisfying about having an actual vantage point in an area that's mostly commuter towns and business parks.

Walkers get the most out of it. It's a quick scramble rather than a proper hike, fifteen minutes there and back if you're not faffing about, so it works as a bite-sized activity between your caravan at Warfield Park or Scotland's House and something more substantial elsewhere. Kids might enjoy the clambering about aspect, though they'll be bored stiff if you expect them to stand around admiring views for long.

It's free and accessible whenever you fancy it. Go when the light's right - early morning or late afternoon makes the views less washed out. Worth a detour if you're staying locally and fancy a quick leg stretch, but don't plan your entire holiday around it.
