Gravel Hill Wood

The ground underfoot is mostly firm, dotted with the odd muddy patch depending on the weather, and the canopy's thick enough that even on scorching summer days there's decent shade. The woodland path meanders through a mix of oak and beech, with enough dips and turns to keep things interesting without being strenuous.

Walkers will get the most from this - families with young legs keen to burn energy, bird watchers who want to spot something without fighting for space, and anyone simply after a bit of peace. It's not going to wow you with views or historical markers, but that's rather the point. You're here for the walk itself, the smell of damp earth, the chance to spot woodland birds. Allow an hour and a half for a proper amble, less if you're just dipping in and out.

Based near Maidstone, it fits well into a broader Kent parks holiday. The nearby Bearsted Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is just over four miles away - close enough for an evening wander before dinner. If glamping's your preference, Chegworth Mill is a touch further but worth it for the facilities. Neither campsite feels a slog from here, which makes Gravel Hill Wood a solid addition to a longer week exploring the area's green spaces.
