Gravel Hole Wood

The woodland floor here is thick with moss and leaf litter, proper spongy underfoot. Gravel Hole Wood is a modest patch of mixed woodland near Little Hoole Moss Houses - nothing dramatic, but exactly the sort of place that rewards a gentle wander if you're staying at Royal Umpire Caravan Park nearby.

It's a straightforward forest walk. Trees, birdsong, the occasional shaft of light cutting through the canopy. The paths are reasonably clear, though muddy in places - wellies aren't a bad shout. You won't find viewpoints or visitor facilities, just woodland as it is. Kids will enjoy it for an hour or so, pottering about and looking for sticks. Older walkers after a proper hike might find it a bit limited.

There's no charge as far as I can tell, and no formal opening times - it's the kind of space you can slip into when you fancy a break from the caravan. Allow an hour for a casual circuit, maybe ninety minutes if you're the sort who stops to examine things. Early morning is best if you want to avoid anyone else.

The location works well for a park holiday break. It's close enough for a post-breakfast outing without eating into the day, but far enough away that it feels like you've actually gone somewhere. Not the sort of place you'd plan a trip around, but absolutely worth knowing about if you're based in the area.
