Graven Hill

Graven Hill rises just outside Bicester as one of those Oxfordshire summits that catches you off guard - nothing dramatic, but the sort of walk that rewards you with proper views across the Cherwell Valley if you time it right. It's an Iron Age hill fort, which means the earthworks alone give it shape and character beyond what the elevation suggests. The ramparts are still distinct enough to read as you walk the circuit, and that's the real draw here rather than any knock-your-socks-off vistas.

This is walker territory, genuinely. Families with young kids might find it a bit of a slog for what amounts to a modest climb, but anyone interested in prehistory or wanting a proper leg-stretcher from Bicester will find it solid. The walk takes a couple of hours depending on how you approach it and how long you linger at the top. Go on a clear day - the Cotswolds blur into the distance and it gives you real spatial sense of where you are in Oxfordshire.

If you're staying at Weston Caravan and Campsite or Glebe Leisure just down the road, it's an obvious morning ramble. The surrounding area has enough going on that you won't feel stranded, and Bicester itself is close enough for supplies or a decent pub lunch afterwards. Admission is free, as with most accessible hill forts. Best visited outside school holidays when footfall is lighter.
