Great Bardfield Cage

You could walk past Great Bardfield Cage without noticing it - that's rather the point. This small Tudor lock-up sits on the high street in Great Bardfield, just east of Braintree, a chunky timber-framed box built to hold troublemakers before the days of proper police stations. It's genuinely tiny, cramped enough to make you claustrophobic just looking at it, which is exactly why it worked.

The cage itself is the whole attraction, really. No grand exhibition, no interactive screens - just the real thing, roughly four centuries old, standing where it's always stood. You'll spend five minutes maximum here, but those five minutes do the job. It's the kind of place that makes history feel actual rather than theoretical. Local history buffs and anyone interested in how rural England kept order will find it worthwhile. Kids under ten might find it a bit dull unless you've primed them with tales of medieval troublemakers.

Great Bardfield itself is a proper Essex village with decent pubs and a working pottery if you're hanging about. If you're based at Hill Farm campsite, barely a mile away, or any of the other spots nearby - Gosfield Lake Resort isn't far either - it's easily a ten-minute detour during a day's wandering. Free to view, accessible any time you can get to it. Don't expect facilities or formal opening times. It's the sort of place that rewards the curious more than the rushing.
