Great Chattenden Wood sits inland from Aylesford, a proper old-growth forest that rewards walkers willing to leave the obvious paths. The trees are genuinely impressive - ancient oaks mixed with younger growth that's created a decent canopy for most of the year.

It's the kind of place where you go to think or to let kids burn off energy climbing over fallen logs. There are clearings where sunlight filters through, and in spring the floor floods with bluebells. No facilities to speak of, no tea room, no visitor centre - just woodland. Bring a map or a sense of adventure, depending on your mood.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a gentle stroll in the park; the terrain's uneven and some sections can get boggy after rain. Allow two to three hours if you want to properly explore rather than just march through. Free access, as far as anyone can tell.

If you're staying at Haven Kent Coast Holiday Park up the road, this makes a solid half-day out that gets you away from the caravan sites. It's close enough for a morning visit without eating up your whole day, though honestly the beach stops at the park won't compete with proper woodland walking. Worth the detour if you like trees more than attractions.
