Great Corby Quarry

The old quarry at Great Corby, just outside Carlisle, has transformed into something genuinely worth a detour if you're after proper walking country with a bit of geological interest thrown in. What you're looking at is an abandoned sandstone quarry that's been colonised by nature - steep rock faces, woodland edges, and a small pool that's become a magnet for wildlife. It's not a manicured nature reserve with visitor centres and interpretation boards; it's the real thing, which means you get genuine peace and quiet.

Historically minded visitors will find the industrial heritage satisfying - you can still see the quarrying marks and understand how the sandstone was worked. Walkers and birdwatchers get the most out of it. The quarry walls create a sheltered microclimate, so flora and fauna here are slightly different from the surrounding landscape. Spring and early summer are best - wildflowers come thick, and the light on those golden-red stone faces is something special.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of, and parking is limited, so arrive early if you're visiting peak times. Allow a couple of hours to properly explore the pathways that wind around the quarry. It's free to visit. The site sits nicely within striking distance of Englethwaite Hall and Eden Valley Glamping if you're basing yourself for a longer break in the area. From Carlisle itself, it's a short drive north - close enough for a morning or afternoon visit without eating into a full day's itinerary.
