Great Furzefield Wood

Ancient woodland where the canopy is so thick in summer you'll swear it's twilight at noon. Great Furzefield Wood spreads across Hertfordshire east of St Albans, offering proper walking country without the crowds you'd find at more famous spots nearby.

It's essentially what it says - a working forest with decent paths threading through. You get oak, birch, and conifer stands depending which part you wander into. There's wildlife about if you're patient: deer aren't uncommon, and the birdwatching's decent. The forest floor changes through the seasons, which matters if you're the type who notices these things.

This is squarely for walkers and anyone after a bit of quiet. Kids will either love it or get bored after forty minutes - depends entirely on the child and whether you're making a game of spotting creatures. The woodland's not dramatic; it won't blow your mind visually, but that's rather the point. It's a place to clear your head, not tick a box.

You can work it into a broader Hertfordshire walking loop easily enough. Staying at Fuzzy's Farm or Highridge Farm - both within an hour's drive - gives you somewhere to base a few days of exploring the area's woodlands and small towns. Allow two to three hours for a proper walk; you won't need more unless you're really wandering.
