Great Wood

The Chilterns around Chesham are proper woodland country, and Great Wood is one of those forests you stumble upon rather than plan around. It's a decent-sized patch of beech and mixed woodland - the kind of place where the canopy gets properly thick and the forest floor stays mossy even after dry spells.

What you get is straightforward: footpaths cutting through the trees, plenty of shade, and enough space to lose an hour or two without feeling like you're walking in circles. It's not dramatic or particularly famous, which is rather the point. Families with young walkers will manage fine on the main paths. The uneven ground and tree roots mean it's not ideal for buggies, but older kids who don't mind a muddy scramble will enjoy it. If you're after dramatic viewpoints or rare flora, you'll be disappointed. This is woodland for the sake of woodland - grey squirrels, bird calls, the smell of leaf mulch.

Timing works best after rain when the forest smells decent, or early morning before the few local dog-walkers arrive. Allow ninety minutes to two hours without rushing. It's close enough to Whelpley Hill Park and Fuzzy's Farm that you could easily combine it with a camping trip - a good morning ramble before settling into your pitch. The Chiltern landscape doesn't demand much: decent boots, a packed drink, and low expectations usually translate to a proper nice walk.
