Greenhead Moss Nature Reserve

Greenhead Moss is a sprawling wetland reserve just outside Lanark that surprises visitors with how raw and alive it feels. Unlike manicured nature attractions, this place is genuinely wild - boggy pathways wind through heather and sphagnum moss, with water glinting between the vegetation at every turn. You're walking on ground that's essentially floating, which takes some getting used to.

Birdwatchers make the pilgrimage here for curlews, golden plovers, and the occasional hen harrier. Even without binoculars, the soundscape is arresting - constant calls, rustling reeds, the squelch of your boots. The reserve demands respect. Wear proper waterproof boots or you'll regret it within ten minutes. Allow two to three hours if you're serious about exploration; an hour if you just want a quick loop.

It's free to access, which is refreshing. The nearest car park is straightforward enough, though signage could be clearer. This isn't a destination for young children unless they're genuinely keen on getting muddy and slightly lost.
