Greenland Copse

You'll find yourself in proper woodland the moment you step into Greenland Copse - dense enough that the Surrey countryside feels miles away, even though Petworth is just down the road. It's the sort of place where you actually notice the quiet. The trees are thick here, the canopy does its job, and there's something about the light filtering through that makes you want to slow down.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The paths wind through the copse in a way that rewards a proper explore rather than a quick pass-through, and it's exactly the kind of woodland walk that leaves you feeling like you've done something real without knackering yourself out. Families with kids who don't need everything explained or themed will find it brilliant - just trees, paths, and the occasional sound of birds. Bring wellies after rain; the ground holds water here.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is rather the point. It's free to walk, open year-round, and you can spend anywhere from 45 minutes to a couple of hours depending on how much wandering appeals to you. Go early morning or late afternoon if you want it quieter.

If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Glamping Holiday or Little Cowdray Farm are both five-star rated and less than six miles away - Greenland Copse makes a decent morning excursion before heading to bigger attractions. It won't steal your whole day, but it's well worth the walk.
