Greenland Plantation

Walk into Greenland Plantation and you're immediately surrounded by tall conifers that block out most of the sky. It's the kind of forest that feels proper enclosed, even on a sunny day. The woodland sits just outside Morpeth, making it dead convenient if you're staying at Tranwell Farm Holidays or one of the other parks nearby.

There's a decent network of paths threading through the trees - nothing too demanding, which is why families with younger kids tend to do well here. You'll see plenty of dog walkers and the odd runner, but it never feels rammed. The forest floor is soft underfoot, mostly needles and moss, and in summer the shade is genuinely welcome when it's hot elsewhere.

It's free to wander around, and most people spend between forty minutes and two hours depending on which routes they fancy. There's no obvious visitor infrastructure - no café, no toilets that I could spot - so come prepared. Early morning or late afternoon is when you'll have the place to yourself; weekends get busier.

If you're basing yourself at Parkdean Resorts Sandy Bay or Tranwell Farm, this is a solid half-day excursion. Worth the trip if you fancy a proper walk in woodland rather than manicured parkland. Don't expect dramatic viewpoints or attractions within the trees - it's straightforward forest walking, which some people love and others find a touch monotonous.
