Greenlane Coppice

The woodland floor here is thick with moss and last season's leaves, the kind of place where you actually notice how quiet things get once you're fifty metres in. Greenlane Coppice is an old-school Shropshire wood - not flashy, no visitor centre or marked trails worth writing home about, but proper woodland all the same.

You're walking through mixed broadleaf, mostly oak and hazel, with enough open space that it doesn't feel claustrophobic. It's the sort of coppice that's been worked for centuries, and you can still see evidence of that management in the way trees grow. Good for walkers wanting something a bit different from the usual park circuits, and families with kids who like the freedom of exploring without being herded along a gravel path.

The woods lie roughly between Stafford and the surrounding Shropshire landscape, making them a natural fit if you're based at somewhere like Fledgling Farm or Westcott Woods Glamping - both within easy striking distance. Allow an hour to two hours depending on how lost you want to get. There's no gate, no fee, no facilities either, so come prepared. It's best in spring when the undergrowth isn't too dense, or autumn when you can actually see the shape of the place. Winter gets muddy fast.

Not a destination in itself, but absolutely worth a morning walk if you're in the area. The kind of wood you don't photograph but remember.
