History buffs won't find much drama here - it's woodland for its own sake, which some will find refreshing and others might find a bit thin on narrative.

The wood sits east of Dunstable and makes a natural pairing with a stay at one of the nearby caravan sites - Merlin Farm is closest to Whipsnade Zoo if you're combining visits - though frankly, if you're already camping in the area, the walks are the main draw. Access appears to be free, which is never a bad thing. Go early on a weekend to avoid the dog-walking crowds, or pick a weekday afternoon when the wood feels properly yours.
