Grove Wood

Wandering into Grove Wood feels like stepping properly off the beaten track. It's a decent-sized patch of woodland east of Colchester, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think - which is rarer than it should be. The trees are thick enough to give real shelter, and there's enough space to roam without feeling like you're treading the same worn path as fifty other visitors that morning.

It's good for families wanting to let kids burn off energy without the ticketed-attraction price tag, though younger ones might tire after an hour or so.

The wood works well as part of a broader countryside day rather than a standalone destination. Winter's moody if you like that sort of thing, but muddy.
