Gun Hill

Gun Hill is a modest rise just east of Peterstone that offers surprisingly good views across Norfolk's flat landscape - on a clear day you can see for miles. It's more of a local vantage point than a dramatic peak, which means you won't spend hours up there, but it's the kind of place worth a detour if you're walking nearby or taking a break between sites.

The hill itself is uncomplicated. You walk up, look out, and that's largely it. What makes it work is the perspective - Norfolk is relentlessly low-lying, so any elevation feels significant. It's genuinely useful if you want to get your bearings on where you are in relation to the wider area, and photographers might catch decent light at dusk.

Walkers will get the most from Gun Hill. It's not a strenuous outing - no scrambling required - but it works well as part of a longer ramble around the Norfolk countryside. Families with young kids might find it bit anticlimactic unless the views fire their imagination. History buffs won't find much to grip them here, though the name hints at defensive positioning.

If you're camping at The Norfolk Brickyard, Deepdale, or Pinewoods, Gun Hill makes a straightforward leg-stretcher, particularly in late afternoon when the light works better. Allow twenty minutes to half an hour. There's no facilities or entrance fee to worry about - it's genuinely free and open. Worth it if you're in the area; not worth driving from far away.
