Hailsham Bonfire Society

Hailsham's bonfire night is properly legendary in Sussex - the Society has been at it since 1977, and they do things the way they used to be done. This isn't some sanitised corporate fireworks display. It's a genuine community event where locals dress up as everything from politicians to pop stars, process through the streets with torches, and then set light to an enormous bonfire while fireworks crack overhead. You get the real feel of how bonfire night used to happen in this part of the world.

The spectacle happens once a year in early November, so timing your holiday around it requires planning ahead. Thousands turn up to watch from Hailsham town centre, so expect crowds and go early for a decent spot. Families with children love it - the parade is entertaining even if the actual bonfire runs late into the evening. Older kids especially enjoy spotting the various effigies and guessing who they're meant to be.

It's free to watch from the street, though the Society occasionally fundraises. Close to Pevensey, you're well placed at any of the local campsites - Fontmills Farm and Hale Farm are both within a few miles and would make solid bases. Dernwood Farm Glamping is a touch further out if you prefer something with more facilities.

If you're there outside November, the town itself is unremarkable. But catch bonfire night and you'll understand why this event matters to people here. It's tradition, community, and honest spectacle.
