Halesworth Airfield Museum

The runway's still there, grass creeping between the concrete, and that's rather the point. Halesworth Airfield Museum occupies a former USAAF base from World War II, and walking around feels less like visiting a museum and more like stumbling onto someone's half-remembered past. You get the actual history of the place - the 486th Bombardment Group operated from here, flying B-17s on raids across occupied Europe - rather than sanitised displays in a purpose-built building.

What you'll find are scattered warbird artifacts, period photographs, and the kind of detail that fascinates aviation enthusiasts and history types properly. Kids under ten might get restless fairly quickly, but anyone with a genuine interest in the air war will spend a good hour here minimum, especially if you catch someone who can talk through the exhibits. The setting does the heavy lifting - there's something about standing on an actual operational airfield, even one returning to nature, that no indoor museum quite manages.

Open afternoons only from April through October, Sundays and public holidays, and it's free. Allow ninety minutes to two hours if you're thorough. The location works well for a broader Suffolk break - you're between Sunnyside Campsite just down the road and Green Haven Camping a few miles further out, both decent bases for exploring the coast and Broads. Halesworth town itself is unremarkable but functional, with decent shops and pubs. On a sunny afternoon with the right company, this is genuinely worthwhile.
