Half Moon Plantation

You'll find Half Moon Plantation sitting just outside Antrim, a proper working forest that feels genuinely off the beaten track. It's the sort of place where you can walk for hours without seeing another soul, which is either brilliant or slightly eerie depending on your mood.

The woodland itself is dense and atmospheric - mature trees, good pathways, and enough space to lose yourself properly. It's ideal for walkers who want a straightforward forest ramble rather than anything touristy or manicured. Kids will enjoy it if they're the type to kick through leaves and spot wildlife rather than needing facilities or themed activities. Bring binoculars and you might clock some proper woodland birds.

There's no visitor centre or café to speak of, so come prepared. It's free to wander, which is exactly how a community forest should be. Allow two to three hours if you're taking your time, less if you're just doing a quick circuit.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Blair's Castlewood or Six Mile Water are both well-rated - Half Moon Plantation works nicely as a morning activity before hitting the coast or heading into Antrim town itself. It's the kind of place that rewards being unhurried. Don't expect dramatic views or Instagram moments. Expect trees, peace, and the occasional muddy patch. For some of us, that's precisely the point.
