Hall Wood

Hall Wood is a proper working forest just outside Morpeth, the kind of place locals know and visitors stumble upon by accident. It's managed woodland rather than a manicured country estate - think mature trees, forest floor that squelches underfoot, and paths that actually feel like paths rather than park benches with a canopy.

You can walk here without paying anything. Most people spend an hour to ninety minutes wandering the network of trails, though if you're after a longer ramble it'll happily accommodate you. The forest is decent for families with kids old enough to handle uneven ground - it's not a push-along-the-pram situation. Dog walkers get the most out of it, if I'm honest. The woodland sits low and sometimes damp, which means it's atmospheric on grey days (so, most days) but can feel a bit claustrophobic if you're after big views.

If you're staying at Cresswell Towers or Golden Sands, both less than a mile away, Hall Wood makes a solid morning outing before heading to the coast. It's also close enough to Morpeth for a quick woodland stretch without much planning. The real value is that it's accessible, free, and genuinely wooded - not a tourist spot trying to be something it isn't. Worth a walk if you're in the area, though don't expect signage or facilities. Bring proper shoes.
