Hamilton Gault Park

The Somerset Levels stretch flat and wide around Taunton, and Hamilton Gault Park sits right in the thick of it - a proper working nature reserve that feels less manicured than your average country day out. You're walking through wetland habitat here, not a manicured loop with information boards every fifty metres. The place thrums with life if you visit at the right time: dragonflies over the water channels, marsh harriers if you're lucky, and in spring the whole thing erupts with nesting birds.

What makes it worth the drive from Taunton is the sheer flatness of the landscape. There's something oddly compelling about a reserve where the horizon never changes and the sky dominates everything. It's not dramatic - don't come expecting moorland vistas - but it rewards slow walking and patience. Birdwatchers will get far more out of it than casual strollers, and families with very young children might find the long flat walks a bit dull after an hour.

The reserve works brilliantly as a morning stop if you're based at one of the nearby touring parks - Cornish Farm is barely twenty minutes away, and Ashe Farm not much further. Both give you a base for exploring the wider Levels. Go early in the day when the birds are most active and the light's softer. It's free to access, which is always decent news. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're serious about birdwatching; forty minutes if you just fancy a straightforward walk and fresh air.
