Hamond Copse

The walk through Hamond Copse is a straightforward woodland ramble that won't set your heart racing but delivers exactly what you'd want from a Sussex forest - decent paths, proper trees, and enough peace to hear yourself think. It's the sort of place locals pop into for a leg-stretch rather than an all-day expedition, which is fair enough. The woodland itself is typical of the Weald - mixed broadleaf and conifers, dappled light on the forest floor, the occasional muddy bit if it's been wet. Most people allow an hour or so, depending on which way you meander. There's nothing dramatically scenic or historically loaded about it, just a solid block of woodland that does what a wood should do.

If you're camping at Gatwick Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just four miles away, this makes a decent morning outing before heading elsewhere. The nearest proper town is Dorking, which has actual sights and shops if the forest doesn't quite scratch the itch. Hamond Copse works best if you're after some air and greenery without the crowds you'd find at more famous walks in the South East. It's free to wander, which helps.

Families with young kids will find it manageable but unremarkable - there's no playground drama or viewpoint payoff. Walkers who just want to be among trees without faffing about route-finding will appreciate the straightforward nature of it. Worth a visit if you're in the area, but don't reroute your whole Sussex trip for it.
