Hanging Wood

Walk into Hanging Wood and you're immediately wrapped in proper old-growth woodland - the kind where sunlight filters through in green-tinted shafts and you half expect to bump into a medieval forester. It's a genuine patch of ancient forest just east of Colchester, dense with oak and beech, the sort of place that feels genuinely separate from the commuter belt despite being minutes from town.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is rather the point. You get woodland, paths that wind through the canopy, and the sort of quiet that makes you remember why you booked a holiday park in the first place. Families with younger kids might find an hour enough - it's walkable but not spectacular in the Instagram sense. For serious walkers or anyone who actually cares about native woodland, though, it's worth the detour from Colchester Country Park or Teybrook Orchard.

The floor's thick with leaf mulch and moss, especially after rain, and it's genuinely lovely in late spring when the bluebells emerge. Autumn's decent too if you like that golden-light-through-trees vibe. You'll want wellies half the year; the paths don't drain brilliantly.

Free access, as far as anyone can tell. There's no signage to speak of and no official opening hours - this is countryside on the honour system. Allow 90 minutes if you want to actually explore rather than just dash through. It's the sort of spot that justifies staying at one of the local parks rather than just passing through Colchester itself.
