Hanging Wood

Hanging Wood is one of those forests that rewards a proper wander without demanding much in return. Near St Albans, it's a small but dense woodland that feels genuinely quiet - unusual for the Home Counties. The beech and oak trees create a decent canopy, and if you time it right in autumn, the ground lights up with copper leaves.

It's the sort of place where families with younger kids can let them loose without worrying about extreme terrain. The paths are manageable, though muddy in wet weather - wellies recommended. Older children and adults after a decent woodland walk will find enough here for an hour or so, though don't expect dramatic vistas or marked trails with interpretive boards.

What makes Hanging Wood worth the detour is its simplicity. No facilities, no entrance fees, no queues. Just trees and quiet. If you're staying at Fuzzy's Farm just down the road, it's an easy addition to your itinerary - close enough that you won't waste half a day travelling. The woodland pairs well with a larger park visit elsewhere in Hertfordshire.

Go in the quieter midweek mornings if you can. Weekends pull in more of the local walking crowd. The wood itself is free to access, which is properly refreshing in an era of ticketed everything. Allow an hour, more if you like a slow amble.
