Hard's Wood

A proper Sussex woodland experience, Hard's Wood sits just outside Horsham and delivers exactly what you'd want from a forest walk - tall trees, decent paths, and enough space to actually feel like you've left the town behind. The woodland itself is mixed deciduous, the kind of place where you'll spot bluebells in spring if you time it right, and there's genuine peace here even on weekends. You can wander the paths for anything from thirty minutes to a couple of hours depending on how deep you want to go, and the terrain is manageable for most fitness levels, though it can get muddy after rain.

This works brilliantly as a break from park life if you're staying at Raylands Country Park just under a mile away, or as a morning outing before heading to Sumners Ponds Fishery a few miles further afield. Families with younger kids will get a solid hour or so out of it - let them hunt for woodland creatures and watch the light filter through the canopy. Serious walkers might find it a touch limited on its own, but it's the sort of place that feeds the soul when you need to step away from the campsite hustle.

Access appears to be free, though there's no visitor centre or facilities I could track down, so come prepared. Early morning visits are your best bet for avoiding the few crowds it gets. The woodland sits comfortably within striking distance of Knepp Wildland Safaris if you fancy combining a forest wander with something more exotic later in the day.
