Hardy Tree

The Hardy Tree sits in St Pancras Old Churchyard, tucked behind King's Cross Station - a Victorian plane tree wrapped in a cage of iron railings. It's not immediately impressive, if you're being honest. But the story is what pulls you in.

Thomas Hardy, the novelist, worked as an architect restoring the church in the 1860s. When the churchyard was cleared for a railway development, the gravestones were stacked against this tree to protect it. Hardy later wrote about the experience, and the image stuck with him so firmly that the tree became forever associated with his name. The railings around it now protect not just the trunk but the memory itself.

Walkers exploring the King's Cross area will find it worth a five-minute detour. The churchyard itself is peaceful - genuinely so, given the madness of the station just beyond the wall. You can't get inside on Sundays, and opening hours are sporadic, so check ahead if you're making a special trip. It's free, naturally, being a public churchyard.

Families with older children interested in Victorian London or Hardy's work will appreciate it. Younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming - it's a tree in a cage, after all. The real value is in standing there and thinking about the weight of a writer's memory attached to a plant.
