Harlyn Bay

The golden sand at Harlyn Bay curves in a proper crescent, backed by low cliffs and dunes that feel genuinely remote despite being just outside St. Merryn. It's the kind of beach that works equally well for families wanting a sheltered swim and serious surfers who know what they're after - the break here draws people from across the county when the Atlantic swells roll in.

What makes it tick is the geography. The bay faces north-west, so you get consistent waves but the water stays reasonably calm in the lee of the headland on calmer days. At high tide the sand shrinks considerably, so timing matters. Low tide reveals loads of space, perfect for kids to burn energy without getting in anyone's way. The whole vibe is less touristy than Padstow's beaches, which sit just a few miles south along the coast.

There's a proper car park and a decent little cafe, though don't expect anything fancy. Lifeguards are on duty during peak season. The walk from car park to sand takes about five minutes and is dead easy - no hills to battle.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks like Padstow Holiday Village or Dennis Cove Campsite, Harlyn is absolutely worth the short drive. Bring a wetsuit unless you're visiting in high summer - the water's bracing even then. Dogs are welcome outside peak times, which is a bonus if you're travelling with a pooch. Arrive early on weekends or you'll be hunting for parking.
