Walking into Harper Rash feels like stepping into something properly wild. This North Yorkshire forest sits near Tadcaster and offers genuine woodland - the sort where you can actually hear yourself think, which is rarer than you'd expect these days.

It's a straightforward forest walk rather than a manicured attraction. You get trees, paths winding through, the usual woodland floor business of roots and leaf litter. No facilities, no visitor centre, no cafe - just you and the wood. For families with kids old enough to manage muddy terrain without complaint, it works well. Older children who like exploring will get more from it than toddlers, if I'm honest.

Walkers looking for a break from the garden centre circuit near Tadcaster will find this a decent half-day addition. There's enough to stretch your legs for an hour or so without it becoming a proper expedition. Weather matters though - after heavy rain the paths get boggy.

If you're staying at Wighill Park Glamping or Cawood Park - both cracking spots for a Yorkshire break - Harper Rash makes a low-key morning out. It's close enough to combine with other activities around the area without burning an entire day. Don't expect dramatic views or anything Instagram-worthy. Think of it as woodland rather than a destination. That said, if forest walks are your thing, it's worth the short drive from either park.
