Harrock Hill

The walk up Harrock Hill from Leyland is a proper no-nonsense Lancashire climb. Nothing fancy - just moorland scrub, wind that cuts through your jacket, and views that stretch across the West Pennine Moors once you've earned them. It's the kind of spot where you'll see dog walkers and fell runners, not crowds of tourists queuing for Instagram shots.

Allow a couple of hours for the round trip, depending on your pace and whether you want to hang about at the top catching your breath. The ascent isn't technical but it's relentlessly uphill, so it's better suited to walkers with decent fitness than families with young children in tow. That said, older kids who don't mind a bit of effort will find it satisfying - there's real countryside up there, and on a clear day you'll see why people bother.

Geographically it works well if you're based at The Secret Garden Glamping, which sits about 5.6 miles away and actually has decent reviews - worth considering if you want somewhere with a bit of comfort after a day outdoors. Bring a map or download the route beforehand. Weather can turn quickly on the moors, so don't rely on a clear morning staying that way. Early autumn is probably the best window - summer can feel clammy, winter's genuinely bleak.
