Hat Hill

The South Downs near Chichester have a way of surprising you when you least expect it. Hat Hill is one of those walks that doesn't announce itself - no visitor centre, no café, just a modest peak that rewards anyone willing to put in the leg work. The climb itself isn't punishing, but it's proper steep in sections, and the views across the Weald once you reach the top make the sweat worthwhile. On a clear day you're looking south towards the coast and north across the farmland that rolls inland. Bring a map. There's no tarmac here, no amenities, just downland turf and the occasional farmer's gate.

This is walker territory, full stop. If you're after a gentle stroll with a gift shop at the end, you'll be disappointed. But if you're the type to spend a morning rambling the South Downs, it slots nicely into a longer loop - Chichester is only a handful of miles away and has all the cafés you could want. The downland around here connects to other decent walks if you're based at one of the local caravan parks like Graffham or Concierge Camping - both within striking distance. Allow an hour for the ascent and a bit longer if you're taking in the views properly. It's free, naturally.

Worth the trip? If you're already in the area, absolutely. If you're making a special journey from London, there are higher peaks nearby that might give you more bang for your buck. But as part of a Sussex walking holiday, it's exactly what you're after - genuine downland, no fuss, proper views.
