Hattonhill Shaw

The woodland at Hattonhill Shaw offers proper ancient forest - the kind where you can actually breathe and hear yourself think. It's a modest spread of mixed woodland near Wallingford, nothing that'll take your breath away with views, but ideal if you want to escape the holiday park noise for a few hours without driving miles.

Walking here is straightforward. The paths are decent enough, though muddy in winter, and you'll spot bluebells if you time it right in spring. Decent for families with primary school kids who need a leg stretch - not so big that anyone gets lost, not so small that it feels like ten minutes round the loop and you're done. Teenagers might find it a bit thin on drama, truth be told.

Historically it's unremarkable compared to some Oxfordshire woodland, which is actually fine - sometimes you just want trees without the interpretive boards. Free to wander, no facilities on site that I could find, so pack snacks and sensible boots.

If you're based at Rolling Fields Glamping or Ridgeway View just up the road, this works well as a morning outing before lunch. It's the sort of place that fits into a broader day rather than being a destination in itself. Honestly, it's worth knowing about but don't expect it to be the highlight - think of it as a useful break from park life when the kids have cabin fever.
