Haughton Park Meadow

A strip of wildflower meadow that catches you off guard just outside Alford. This isn't a manicured garden or a theme park - it's genuinely wild land where the grass gets proper long and the insects seem to outnumber visitors. The kind of place where you spot butterflies you didn't know existed and remember why meadows matter.

Walking through in summer is the whole point. The paths are informal, sometimes barely there, and you're genuinely spotting orchids and vetches rather than reading interpretive boards. It takes maybe thirty minutes to an hour depending on how much you dawdle - and you will dawdle. Children get something out of it if they're into turning over logs and hunting insects, but it's not a destination for keeping restless kids entertained.

The Haughton Holiday Park sits virtually on the doorstep, which makes this a natural add-on if you're staying there rather than a reason to visit Aberdeenshire on its own. Go in May or June when the wildflowers are actually flowering, not November when it's just brown stubble.

It's free to wander, no facilities to speak of - bring decent boots if the ground's been wet. The value here is quiet and genuine biodiversity, not spectacle. Real naturalists will appreciate it; folks wanting a quick photo stop should skip it.
