Hawkridge Bird of Prey Centre

The birds here are serious. Hawkridge Bird of Prey Centre, just inland from Exmouth, is run by people who actually know raptors rather than just keeping them in cages for show. You'll see hawks, falcons, and owls in various states of training - some are rescue birds, some are actively flown.

What you get depends on when you visit. There are usually demonstrations throughout the day where handlers fly the birds, though don't expect Hollywood theatrics. It's genuinely educational stuff - you learn why a peregrine's built the way it is, how they hunt, what their recovery rates are. Kids find the flying displays gripping, especially when a hawk suddenly spots prey and moves.

Allow two to three hours if you're keen. Less if you just want the main flying display. The centre isn't massive, so you won't be wandering for hours, but there's enough to absorb if you're interested in the birds themselves rather than just ticking a box.

It works well as a half-day stop when you're staying at Ladram Bay Holiday Park nearby - close enough that you're not burning petrol, far enough that it feels like a proper outing. Go mid-week if you can; weekends get rammed with school groups and the magic drains a bit. Bring cash for the gift shop and maybe a packed lunch if you're planning to make an afternoon of it. The outdoor setting means dress for Devon weather - it can turn damp quickly.
