Haygrove Wood

The woodland floor at Haygrove Wood is thick with leaf litter and moss - it's the kind of place where you notice the quiet more than anything else. This modest forest patch sits just outside Calne and doesn't pretend to be anything grander than it is: a proper walk through mixed woodland where you're more likely to bump into a dog walker than a tour group.

It's the sort of spot locals have probably known about for years without making a fuss. You get decent tree cover, some gentle paths that aren't aggressively waymarked, and the general sense of being away from things even though you're only on the edge of town. In autumn it's worth the trip for the colours alone.

Historically minded visitors might appreciate its proximity to Calne's industrial heritage - the town's railway past and cloth mills aren't far away - but Haygrove is really about the walking itself rather than any heritage angle. An hour to ninety minutes will cover most routes without rushing. It's dead useful if you're staying at The Moors Campsite down the road: close enough for an evening walk, far enough to feel like proper countryside.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after a while - there's no facilities or dramatic features - but if you've got restless teenagers or keen walkers in tow, it does the job. Come in spring when the woodland floor is carpeted with bluebells, or honestly any time except perhaps mid-winter when everything's soggy and grey.
