Heath Pool

A quiet stretch of water in the Powys countryside, Heath Pool sits just outside Bishops Castle and makes for a straightforward lakeside walk if you're camping nearby. It's not dramatic - no alpine peaks reflected in still water, nothing that'll make you gasp. What you get instead is a proper rural moment: a modest pool fringed by trees, reedy edges, and the kind of silence that actually feels rare these days.

Walkers will appreciate the lack of crowds. There's a footpath around it that takes maybe 45 minutes at a stroll, and it's flat enough for families with young kids or anyone not keen on steep gradients. Birdwatchers might find it worth lingering for - the reeds attract wildfowl, particularly in winter. On a grey afternoon it's rather lovely in a understated way; on a sunny day it's just pleasant without being spectacular.

From Foxholes Campsite or Woodbatch Camping, both within a few miles, Heath Pool works as an easy leg-stretcher between exploring Bishops Castle itself and heading further into the Shropshire Hills. It's the kind of spot you'd include in a rambling day rather than make a special trip for, but if you're based locally it deserves a visit. Bring binoculars if you're serious about birds. No facilities that we're aware of, so pack a flask. Free access, naturally - this is proper countryside.
