The main draw here is the woodland itself: a mix of conifers and deciduous trees that shift with the seasons, though autumn when the heather colours up is particularly striking.

It's a solid choice for families wanting an easy woodland walk without committing to a full-day hike. Kids can run ahead on the main paths without you losing sight of them, and there's enough to explore that an hour here won't feel wasted. The forest floor is soft underfoot and the paths are manageable even after wet weather. If you're after something more demanding, fair warning: this isn't the place. Staying at either Halleaths or Cressfield caravan parks puts you five or six miles away, making Heatherie an easy morning outing before heading elsewhere.
