Hedleyhope Fell

The walk up Hedleyhope Fell rewards you with proper views across County Durham once you've made the effort - and it does require effort. This isn't a gentle stroll; it's a genuine hill with heather moorland and the kind of wind that'll test your waterproofs. On a clear day you can see for miles, which makes the climb worth doing.

It's the sort of place that appeals to walkers after a proper challenge rather than families after a casual afternoon out. The fell itself is unremarkable from a distance, but the landscape around it tells the story of the Pennines - open, windswept, and quietly impressive. Allow a couple of hours return trip depending on fitness and weather.

Derecroft is the nearest settlement, though honestly there's not much there. What makes sense is combining this with a base at Bradley Burn Caravan Park, about five miles away. That gives you easy access to the Pennines without being wedged in a tourist hotspot. The park itself has decent reviews and puts you within striking distance of other fell walks in the area.

Timing matters. Morning is best - afternoon mist can roll in quickly and spoil the views entirely. Winter's grim unless you're properly equipped. Spring and early autumn are probably sweet spots, when the weather's more forgiving but the moorland's still showing colour. It's free, of course, being a fell. Just turn up and walk.
