Hemlingford Footbridge

The iron footbridge at Hemlingford is one of those proper Victorian structures that makes you stop and actually look at the craftsmanship. It spans the Anker Valley just outside Atherstone, and if you're walking through the area you'll come across it by accident more than intention - which is half the charm.

It's a solid red-brick and cast-iron affair with decent views down the valley, though nothing that'll take your breath away. The real pull here is that it's genuinely old, genuinely local, and you won't find coachloads of tourists queuing to photograph it. History enthusiasts will appreciate the engineering; walkers love it as a natural stopping point on longer routes through Warwickshire.

There's no admission fee - you simply walk across it. Allow fifteen minutes to have a proper look round and maybe sit on the bank if the weather's decent. The bridge itself takes maybe five minutes to cross, but the surrounding fields are worth lingering in. Spring's best if you want greenery; autumn if you prefer dramatic skies.

If you're based at Nightingales Rustic Camping nearby, this makes an easy morning walk. It's not dramatic enough to plan a whole trip around, but as part of a Warwickshire ramble it works well. The Anker Valley has reasonable walking potential, and Atherstone itself offers proper pubs and shops if you need sustenance. Honest verdict: worth the detour if you're already in the area, but don't drive miles out of your way for it.
