Hendersyde Quarry

There's a proper forest walk waiting at Hendersyde Quarry, just outside Coldstream in the Scottish Borders. You won't find the usual quarry-pit drama here - instead, it's been left to nature, with woodland paths threading through what was once stone extraction. The whole thing feels less like industrial archaeology and more like stumbling into someone's private forest discovery.

The walk itself takes the better part of an hour if you amble. Trees tower overhead, the path is well-trodden, and there's that satisfying crunch of woodland floor underfoot. It's the sort of place families with kids aged six and up will actually enjoy rather than tolerate. Younger children might find the distance a touch much, but there's enough variety in the trees and undergrowth to keep attention at least halfway round.

Historically minded types will get a kick from seeing the old quarry walls revealed through the trees - evidence of what this place used to be before it was reclaimed. The contrast between industry and regrowth is genuinely interesting, even if you don't go in for that sort of thing.

Coldstream Holiday Park sits just five miles away, making this a solid half-day option alongside other Borders attractions. No entry fee that I could find, and no apparent restrictions on access. Timing-wise, spring and early autumn are best - you'll avoid the summer mud and midges without the winter dreariness. Worth the detour if you're staying locally and fancy something free and straightforward.
