Hermitage Wood near Market Rasen is a proper ancient woodland - the kind of place where you actually feel like you're walking through something old. It's not a grand destination with cafe or facilities - you come here to walk quietly through the trees, spot woodland birds, maybe find some ancient earthworks if you know what to look for. Allow an hour or two depending on how many paths you fancy exploring. The ground can be boggy in winter, so boots are essential. Go in late April or May for the flowers, or October for that golden light filtering through copper leaves.

It slots perfectly into a stay at nearby Wolds View Country Park - you're only five miles away, so manageable for a morning session before heading back to base. The contrast works well: caravan comfort one minute, proper woodland immersion the next. Don't expect anything touristy or curated here. It's just genuinely good woodland walking, free and undeveloped, which is exactly why it's worth the trip from Market Rasen.
